Five Ghanaians have been arrested at the Dubai International Airport for trafficking.
They were arrested at the Dubai international airport while allegedly attempting to smuggle marijuana into the United Arab Emirates (UAE) within the first quarter of 2021.
This was made known by the Consulate General of the Republic of Ghana, Dubai in a statement after the arrest.
According to the Consulate, the parcels were given to the suspects by agents in Ghana who acquired the EAU visas for them with instruction to give the parcels to their counterpart agents in EAU upon arrival.
It also noted that the weed was normally hidden in food items.
Although all the five are in police detention, the Consulate said one has been slapped with a 10-year jail sentence for not knowing he was carrying weed that someone else could have benefited from.
The Consulate therefore cautioned Ghanaian travelers to desist from taking parcels/messages from agents or any other person to Dubai unless it can inspect the parcel and ascertain its true content.
