The Minister of Fisheries and Aquaculture Development, Mavis Hawa Koomson has begun a four-day working visit to the Western Region.
This forms part of the Minister’s efforts to acquaint herself with the work of the fisherfolks in the region.
It will also give her the platform to interact with the fishermen and fishers to know the challenges confronting their work and solicit their ideas on how best they can collaborate as stakeholders to bring a lasting solution to the challenges.
On the first day of her visit which was yesterday April 20, 2021, she paid a courtesy call on the Western Regional Minister, Kwabena Okyere Darko-Mensah to notify him about her presence in the region at the Western Regional Coordinating Council in Sekondi.
Hon. Hawa Koomson, will on the second day of her visit pay a courtesy call on the Municipal Chief Executive of Jomoro, Ernest Kwofie, inspect the cold store facility and interact with the chief fishermen and fishers within the municipality.
The Minister will from there depart to Axim in the Nzema East municipality and pay a court call on the Municipal Chief Executive, Frank Okpenyen, and the Paramount Chief of Axim, Awulae Attibrukusu at his palace after which she will inspect the ongoing works of the landing beach sites at Axim.
She will also interact with chief fishermen, fishmongers and NAFTA in Axim to end his third day visit and depart to Takoradi.
On the third day the minister will meet the staff of the Fisheries Commission, FEU, and leadership of the Fish Farmers Association, pay a courtesy call on the Mayor of Sekondi-Takoradi metropolis and Paramount Chief of Essikadu, Nana Kobina Nketsia IV.
Hon. Hawa Koomson is also expected to interact with the chief fishermen, fishers at Sekondi Fishing Harbour and fishers at Shama district respectively.
She will end her visit on Friday, April 23, 2021, and depart to Accra.
She was accompanied by the staff from MoFAD, Fisheries Commission and National Premix Secretariat staff.
The Minister of Fisheries and Aquaculture Development, Mavis Hawa Koomson, in an interview highlighted the reasons for the visit.
The Western Regional Minister, Kwabena Okyere Darko-Mensah, also in an interview appealed to the minister to institute a loan scheme for the fishers especially the women in the industry to cushion Th financially in the dishing business.
